Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca (White Coast) extends along the eastern coast of Spain (approximately in the middle) and covers the province of Alicante.

Although the Costa Blanca has around 300 days of sunshine per year it is not as hot or humid in the summer as the Costa del Sol, in the south. The Costa Blanca has the best all year round temperatures. The climate is recognised as one of the healthiest in the world by the World Health Organisation and in the winter months the Costa Blanca is lucky enough to have nearly as many sunny days as in the summertime.

The Costa Blanca has over 100 kms of sandy beaches and rocky coves and many of the beaches have the coveted European Blue Flag signifying cleanliness and safe bathing.  Of course the charms of the area have meant that many foreigners now live here. Not just people retiring, many young families move to the Costa Blanca searching for a better lifestyle. Every nationality can be found here but especially English and Germans.

There are a huge number of flights into Alicante Airport, especially from Northern Europe. Further to the south of the Costa Blanca is Murcia-San Javier Airport, also well serviced. With the introduction of low-cost airlines many people live in Spain and commute to work in England.

The Costa Blanca has many historical monuments such as the The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, looking out over the Bay of Alicante from its position atop Mount Benacantil. But its main attraction lies in its beauty - the amazing vivid blue Mediterranean waters, the lovely sandy beaches, the old towns and villages with their old narrow streets, the restaurants and bars where one can sit and relax outside because of the wonderful all-year round climate. It's simply a wonderful place in which to enjoy life.

La Zenia
La Zenia is located on the Costa Blanca South, 10 minutes south of the major town of Torrevieja. It is a small but busy resort, made popular by its many restaurants, bars, shops, and fabulous beaches. It is a very popular holiday destination with year-round visitors.

La Zenia is a great location for a beach holiday, with its shallow waters and beautiful soft sand, making it a perfect destination for families. The most popular of beaches are Cala Bosque and Cala Cerrada.

The fabulous cliff walk from La Zenia to Cabo Roig offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, and with the occasional beach bar where you can stop off for a cold glass of refreshment.

Road infrastructure is excellent in La Zenia, with access to the AP-7 close by which will take you north to Alicante Airport in around 45 minutes, and south to Murcia-San Javier Airport in around 20 minutes.

The N-332 coastal road, soon to become a four-lane carriageway, also makes access up and down the Costa Blanca to the various small Spanish towns along the way, very quick and convenient, and all are well worth a visit.

To the north, why not stop off at Playa Flamenca, Punta Prima, Torrevieja, La Mata, or visit cosmopolitan Alicante with its fabulous harbour. Benidorm is also well worth a visit and is around 30 minutes north of Alicante.

To the south of La Zenia you can enjoy exploring Cabo Roig, Dehesa de Campoamor, Torre de la Horadada, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcazares, and Santiago de la Ribera.

Punta Prima
Punta Prima is a beautiful coastal resort located on the southern Costa Blanca, just 5 minutes from La Zenia, and within easy reach of several wonderful beaches all with ‘Blue Flag’ status.

Punta Prima has a new commercial centre called Punta Marina, near to the roundabout on the N-332, where you will find a large Consum supermarket, along with several shops, bars and restaurants. Further facilities, including banks and a pharmacy, can be found in the main area of Punta Prima.

Punta Prima also benefits from good links to the AP-7 and N-332.

Alicante Airport is around 45 minutes north, and south, to Murcia-San Javier Airport, around 20 minutes.

Cabo Roig
Cabo Roig is one of the most exclusive developments along the Costa Blanca, situated 5 miles from Torrevieja. The Maritime Walk, which embraces the whole of the peninsular coastline, gives access to some of the finest sandy beaches on the Costa Blanca.

Cabo Roig sits on the Mediterranean coastline of the Southern Costa Blanca, and is often referred to as “the jewel of the Costa Blanca”, due to its fine sandy beaches, its luxurious detached villas, and its prestigious marina and it is perhaps the most exclusive resort along this stretch of the Costa Blanca coastline.

The most popular beaches are Cala Capitan and Cala Caleta. The marina is also a great spot to enjoy the watersports on offer.

Campoamor
Dehesa de Campoamor is fast becoming a much sort after retreat from the stresses of modern life. Many Spanish have second homes here and as a result the area retains a very traditional Spanish atmosphere.
The most popular beaches are Playa de la Glea, Playa de la Regia, and Playa Barranco Rubio. Again Campoamor benefits from its own fabulous marina.

Torrevieja
Torrevieja is located in the Spanish region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Beautiful sandy beaches, Europe's biggest salt flats bursting with bird life, historic sites and a huge variety of Spanish and international restaurants are just a very few of the reasons to book a holiday here.
The resort is just 35kms south of Alicante's international airport, El Altet. The easy access to Torrevieja for foreign visitors and its wide range of facilities and attractions make this a popular year-round holiday destination.
Torrevieja as a town dates from the early 18th Century when it was a fishing village built around one of the watchtowers that flanks the Costa Blanca coastline. This watchtower was called the "Old Tower" or la Torre Vieja, because of the bad condition that it was in, and this is where the town took its name.
Torrevieja's biggest attraction is without doubt its seafront. The promenade, the marina, the fine, sandy beaches and numerous rocky coves provide something for everyone - the sports enthusiast, the sun worshipper, the people watcher and the nature lover.
Whether you're seeking nature and tranquility or fun and action you'll find it among Torrevieja's beaches, esplanades, parks, gardens and salt lakes.
The resort's sandy beaches are among the most popular of the entire Spanish coast. They consistently win the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and provide excellent services and facilities. With around 340 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 20 degrees, the beach is the place to be!
There are five main beaches in Torrevieja. At the northern end of the resort is the popular La Mata beach which offers fine sand and a full range of facilities - foot showers, volleyball nets, water sports etc.
La Mata is linked to Salaret point by a series of small, rocky coves which in turn lead to two of the most popular and lively beaches – Playa de Los Locos and Playa del Cura, both of which have fine sand, calm waters, a full range of facilities and the benefit of a bustling seafront promenade.
To the south of the town you'll find another popular beach, Los Naufragos.

For walkers and lovers of nature, Torrevieja offers stunning cliff walks, many natural beauty spots and of course the two huge natural salt water lakes, teeming with bird life. These are the second biggest in the world, and certainly the largest in Europe. The lagoons have been designated as national parks and are an impressive sight, attracting more than 250 bird species including flamingos. The flats have been used for salt production since Roman times and still provide salt for export worldwide.
In Roman times this area was well known for its outstanding port. The remains of the ‘embarcadero romano’ (Roman Docks) can still be seen near the ancient watch tower of La Mata.
Torrevieja boasts a wonderful promenade with a lively craft market and a huge number of bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours.
The town also has easy access to some of the best golf courses around. Villamartin, Las Ramblas, Quesada, Campoamor, and the newly built La Finca courses are all less than 15 minutes drive away. Further afield is the renowned La Manga Resort.
Torrevieja, like most important Spanish towns, has a number of Fiestas, with one being held most months of the year, when tourists mingle with the locals to party in the streets in true Spanish-style.
The world-famous Habanera festival for choral groups is held every August, when the population expands roughly tenfold, like many other towns along the Costa Blanca.
The Torrevieja area is famous for salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante and it’s impressive to see the huge salt mountains producing, annually, more than half a million tons.
The salt works started to be developed in the 18th century when large amounts of salt were discovered in the lagoon. Today, the salt works in Torrevieja are considered to be the most important in the world, after the Dead Sea.
The town's salt is exported to northern Europe, Canada, the United States and Western Africa and is used for a variety of purposes such as a dressing for salting meat and fish, in industries as a water softener, and in colder countries it is used on their icy roads and airport runways. In African countries it is used as a fridge, to conserve food and prevent it from dehydrating.
The salt water lakes absorb water from the atmosphere and create a special microclimate which is widely regarded to be beneficial for sufferers of rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory problems. There are mud baths and various health treatments available locally - and you don't have to be unwell to benefit from them!
